So here’s a question I’ve asked myself for years… How do people choose which football team to profess their allegiance to?? What are the top factors that go into making that decision? After all, once a person is a fan of one of the NFL teams, that bond is rarely, if ever, broken. It’s a phenomenon that many who don’t follow sports question. It’s difficult to be able to imagine being so die-hard over a sports team. But that’s just the thing, if you don’t follow sports, you don’t have to understand. And that is just part of what makes being a fan so great.
So after doing some thinking I’ve come up with my top 10 reasons why people choose their NFL teams. If you haven’t chosen a team to follow yet, here are some reasons to consider. Or maybe you are already an avid fan, and can relate to the things on the list 🙂 SO here we go…
#1. Family Tradition
A lot of times choosing what team to root for can be a very easy decision. For example, in my family, being a Rams fan was just expected. In a lot of family’s allegiance to their team goes back generations, just like mine does. Getting your family together is a sure thing when your team is playing. During the off-season the dedication goes on, I get so much joy out of buying Rams football gear for my family. We have built so many cherished memories out of our love for football, and the Rams.
#2. Civic Allegiance
As a way to identify and become unified with your community! If you have an NFL team in your city, or state, this is a fantastic way to show your pride for the place you live. The feeling of community, and sharing a passion for the same team, with the same end goal is so strong you actually feel bound in a unique way. And that is why you have fans of specific teams all over the place. Because even if you move away from the area, your bond to that team, and that community, remains.
#3. Pure Escape
It’s a great escape from the seriousness that life can bring. After a long week at work, and attending to responsibilities at home there is nothing like sitting down to watch your team play while drinking some cold beers to unwind. NOTHING. Trust me. 🙂
#4. A Bonding Experience
Having the same favorite sports team with family or friends is a special way to bond. Cheering on your team together brings you together, not only physically, but emotionally. This is an awesome opportunity not only for father and son, brothers, and friends, but also a great way for women to “relate to the guys.” Even when your rooting for opposite teams it is FUN. There is nothing like egging each other on, not knowing whose team will win. This is also where nice little wagers can pay off.
#5. An Excuse to Make Wings and Nachos!
For many, football just goes along with certain staple foods. From classic buffalo wings, nachos, chips, veggies, and dips, to pizza. Game day just wouldn’t be the same without adding these delicious foods! Growing up I remember looking forward to Sunday’s game because my mom made the BEST nachos. Also, did I mention, watching is a WORKOUT! So we don’t have to feel too bad about splurging on some great food, because you can work it off just by jumping up and down to cheer for your team. 😉
#6. Symbolic Allegiance
So where some fans find that rooting for specific NFL teams brings them together with their local community, other fans find that rooting for a specific football team sets them apart. And they LOVE that. This is a great way for someone that does not have a team in their area to choose any team they like. One team might have something special that you love that sets them apart from the others. Many people choose their favorite team based on factors like who plays for that team, or the color and style of their uniforms. It doesn’t have to be, for instance, you live in Seattle, so your obviously a Seahawks fan. Your team may represent your own unique identity, not an identity of a community as a whole.
#7. It’s Buzzworthy
There is nothing like being able to rub your teams win in your rivals faces 😉 Seriously. And social media just makes it way too easy. Haha.
#8. Fitness Motivation
Seeing how in shape the players and cheerleaders are always motivates me. It is amazing how much dedication they place into being physically fit. I may never be “that fit” but it definitely motivates me.
#9. A Way to Root for the Underdog
No matter what the sport, if my team isn’t playing, I’m 100% rooting for the underdog. Not only do I want to see them have success and gain recognition, but it is so sweet when you place a bet with someone and the team that “isn’t supposed to win” is victorious.
#10. The Lack of a Pre-Destined Outcome
We all watch shows or movies were we can pretty much guess the outcome mid-way through. A lot of things in life, at least to me, often seem predictable. There is nothing like watching your team play, rooting for them, and not knowing for sure if they will win the game or not. And when they do, there is no way to describe how awesome it feels!
Being a fan enforces so many positive qualities it’s hard to even begin to list them all. Having a team fosters commitment, dedication, determination, loyalty, excitement, and helps build relationships with others. I would say all of these things make watching the NFL more than worth it. Because it brings you happiness and includes so many positive attributes. If you have a reason that I didn’t include please feel free to leave me a comment below, I would love to hear from you.
